Currency in Norway

The official currency of Norway is the Norwegian krone (NOK), but several attractions, local buses, the Tourist Information Office and taxi companies accept some foreign currencies. However, they may charge a fee, offer a poorer exchange rate or only give change in NOK.

In Tromsø you can exchange currency at Ria. Their offices are in Storgata 32, inside the Bravo grocery shop. We also recommend that you exchange currency at Oslo airport on arrival in Norway.

ATM machines

ATM machines are widely available in downtown Tromsø and at Tromsø airport. Please note that owing to bank fees it may be cheaper to use your credit card instead of exchanging money.

Major credit and debit cards, such as Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Diners, are widely accepted throughout Norway.

Tipping

It is not uncommon to give tips in Norway, but it is not expected all the time. If you are satisfied with the service in a restaurant or bar, tipping will be much appreciated. The normal level is up to 10% extra. It is not so common to tip taxi drivers or for other forms of public transport. However, it is up to the customer to decide whether they wish to reward good service with a tip.
